Publishing began at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in 1933 but in the 1970s and 1980s, under Jim Watson's leadership, a series of books emerged that captured the leading edge of research in molecular genetics, cancer biology, and cell biology. These classic volumes have been long out of print and largely unobtainable. Now, the best of these volumes will be made available for purchase, in whole or in part, through this Cold Spring Harbor Classic Bookshelf. Delivered as PDF files, the material in this Bookshelf may be a historically valuable account of a field, or a definitive description of a topic no longer covered in existing books.

The first items available are the 2-volume yeast monographs, The Molecular Biology of the Yeast Saccharomyces, Life Cycle and Inheritance (1981) and Metabolism and Gene Expression (1982) in their entirety. Other material will follow soon, including classics from the fields of bacterial and phage genetics, the molecular biology of tumor viruses, and more.
